He played a supporting role in the 1967 Sidney Poitier film In the Heat of the Night. He hitchhiked from Atlanta to Los Angeles in 1961, where he enrolled in acting classes.

Scott Wilson was an actor from the United States. In the Heat of the Night, In Cold Blood, The Great Gatsby, Dead Man Walking, Pearl Harbor, and Junebug were among his more than 50 film credits. Wilson was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1980 for his performance in William Peter Blatty’s The Ninth Configuration, for which he received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture. On the AMC television series The Walking Dead, he plays veterinarian Hershel Greene. He also had a recurring role as casino billionaire Sam Braun on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and a starring role as Abel Johnson in the Netflix series The OA. Wilson, who was 76 years old at the time, died of leukemia on October 6, 2018.
