Career
He is a Leicester, England-born Canadian inventor. For his employer CM&S, he developed a portable radio signaling device dubbed a “packset,” which eventually became known as the “Walkie-Talkie.”
In 1939, while Hings was in Spokane, Washington, filing a patent for the packset, Canada declared war on Germany. Hings worked for CM&S in Ottawa from 1940 to 1945, redeveloping his innovative innovation for military use. He invented a number of models during this time, including the popular C-58 Walkie-Talkie, for which he was awarded the MBE in 1946 and the Order of Canada in 2001.
