He was creating and writing music under the name Devon Hendryx during his military service in Japan. He came to Baltimore in 2015 and started making music under the pseudonym JPEGMafia, releasing his mixtape Communist Slow Jams in April 2015. Hendricks released his debut studio album, Black Ben Carson, in February 2016 via Deathbomb Arc, following a series of mixtapes, with a harsher, distorted sound than his previous projects. Four months later, he released The 2nd Amendment, a joint EP with fellow Baltimore rapper Freaky.
