He set several Kansas City Chiefs records, including records for single-game and single-season rushing yard totals. He and fellow Chiefs running back Priest Holmes are both members of the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame. He was an All-American in 1979 and 1980 while playing for the Northwestern State Demons.
