Colton Dixon initially auditioned for the Nashville auditions in the tenth season, along with his sister Schyler. Neither of them, however, ended up in the top 24. Dixon performed at the Ellen DeGeneres Show on 3 March 2011.
Dixon returned in season 11, but he did not plan to give an audition, initially planning to just accompany his sister Schyler to her audition. The judges also asked Dixon to audition, where he sang David Cook’s “Permanent.” Both Schyler and he were awarded golden tickets. Schyler was cut again during the Las Vegas round, which brought her to tears.
On his final judgment performance, Dixon performed Coldplay’s “Fix You” and dedicated it to his sister, Schyler. On 23 February 2012, Dixon was placed in the 11th Top 25 season.
