Career
Cordero was the first Puerto Rican jockey to win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes, though not all in the same year. Cordero won the Kentucky Derby atop Cannonade when he was 31 years old in 1974. He went on to win the Derby two more times, making him one of only eight jockeys in Derby history to do it.
Cordero’s career was cut short in 1992 when he suffered a near-fatal fall. Cordero is no longer riding, but he is still actively involved in the sport. He represents John Velazquez, a fellow Puerto Rican horse jockey. In 1988, ngel Cordero Jr. was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, and the Nassau County Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. The African-American Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame inducted him in 2010.
