He has also been Federal Secretary of the League, since 15 December, 2013, Member of the Senate of the Republic, since 23 March, 2018, and Minister of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility, since October 22, 2022, as well as, Minister of the Interior, from 1 June, 2018 to 5 September, 2019, among other duties.

He is the son of Silvana and business executive Ettore Salvini.

Matteo has a son with his former wife, journalist Fabrizia Ieluzzi; and a daughter with his former partner Giulia Martinelli.

Matteo’s paternal grandfather was named Aldo Salvini.

He is said to have an Emilia-Romagnan grandmother.
