If you know enough about Billie Eilish, you’ll know her real last name is O’Connell. Is this the biggest indicator of her potentially Irish ancestry?
Billie Eilish is of Irish and Scottish descent. Her father, Patrick O’Connell, is an actor with strong Irish roots. While she isn’t Irish by nationality, it’s definitely in her blood.
Strong And Proud Roots
It’s a well-known fact that there has been a huge contingent of ‘Irish Americans’ in the United States since around the 1700s, when Irish people began emigrating from their home country to further afield. It’s because of this reason that today there are around 33 million Irish Americans on US soil, living among proud and strong communities.
Billie Eilish’s father would have had ancestors that took this path, giving him the Irish heritage that he proudly boasts today. This has of course passed on to Billie, and there is plenty of evidence of her pride in this fact. She has gone on record as highlighting that the pronunciation of her stage name – Eilish – is just so as a tribute to her heritage. The correct pronunciation is ‘Eye-Lish’, a close mirror to ‘Irish’.
Her brother and song-writing partner opted for another path with his naming convention – staying traditional – but the Irish roots shine through even deeper here. His name is Finneas O’Connell, an Irish moniker through and through.
Eilish And Ireland Today
In 2019, Billie Eilish performed at a huge festival – the Electric Picnic – held in Ireland. It was on this stage that she proudly stated she was part Irish and that Ireland was “her home”. In an interview with an Irish news agency, Eilish explained that she had been told her whole life about her Irish ancestry and was happy knowing about it.

We can’t say why it took Eilish eighteen years to visit what she considers to be her homeland, but it does seem like she had a joyous homecoming. It’s entirely reasonable to speculate that if Eilish’s pride for her heritage were to grow she could relocate to the country, as many celebrities the world over live – or reside – in countries far away from their birthplace.
