Where did ASAP Rocky grow up?
Harlem, in Upper Manhattan, New York City, housed ASAP Rocky when he was a child.
Rakim (ASAP’s real name) was born in Harlem to a Barbadian father and American mother. The rapper didn’t grow up in the best conditions because his father was a drug dealer.
When Rakim was 12, his father was arrested for selling drugs in the neighborhood and stayed in jail for over a year. After he was released, he died from pneumonia when the rapper was only 13 years old.
The family had to start living from shelter to shelter just to survive.
In 2001, Rakim’s older brother died during a gang shootout. So when ASAP Rocky turned 14 years old, he started peddling drugs too. But he didn’t seem to have much luck as he got arrested along the line and even spent about two weeks in jail.
When ASAP Rocky was young, he lived in shelters located in different areas within NYC. Most of his childhood revolved around Harlem, Manhattan, and Elmwood. The rapper didn’t have a lot as a child but managed to build a successful career in the music industry.
