When Did Rayon Start?

Rayon, invented in 1846, began to be manufactured in the United States in 1911. Called artificial silk until 1924 when the name rayon was coined, rayon was a less expensive alternative to silk clothing and accessories.

When did rayon fabric become popular?

Rayon exploded in the 1920s as a popular fashion fiber, beginning with socks, lingerie and clothing. The variety of available fabrics and finishes meant that any women could now wear garment types once affordable only to women who could buy silk.

Where was rayon first used?

In 1884 in France, Count Hilaire de Chardonnet, called the 'father of rayon', made the first practical commercial production of rayon fiber. After that, various manufacturing processes were developed for its production. Rayon fiber is available as filament, staple, and tow. Most rayon is used in staple form.
