Herons, egrets, and other protected species of birds feed on fish they catch while wading in shallow water at the edge of a pond or river. They are therefore vulnerable to attack by dogs that are left to run free along the shore.
Can a heron eat a small dog?
The heron would not eat the dog, they swallow food whole and do not have a beak for tearing flesh. If you suspect a heron fought a small dog, you might want to keep an eye out for floating signs of canine remains in the nearest body of water.
Will a heron attack a human?
It is rare for Blue Herons them to attack humans. If a blue heron does attack a person, the most likely cause would be defending its nest or young from an intruder. The bird may also try to protect itself if startled by someone too close to their nest, and will fly at the person who scared them.
