Here's the #1 rule: Do not remove the impaled object.. Pulling out the object can damage nerves and blood vessels and make the wound much worse. Instead, you should: Call 911 and get your first aid kit.

If the impaled object is in the cheek and bleeding profusely or obstructing the airway: 1) Remove object if this can easily be done. 2) Maintain open airway. 3) Control bleeding and dress wound.

1 Impaled objects create a puncture wound and then tamponade (put pressure on) that same wound from the inside, controlling bleeding. By removing the impaled object, you run the risk of triggering bleeding that now cannot be stopped with external pressure.
