The Spotter Network is a system that utilizes storm spotter and chaser reports of location and severe weather in a centralized framework for use by coordinators such as emergency managers, Skywarn and related spotter organizations, and the National Weather Service.

Who is eligible and how do I get started? NWS encourages anyone with an interest in public service to join the SKYWARN® program. Volunteers include police and fire personnel, dispatchers, EMS workers, public utility workers and other concerned private citizens.

What is spotter activation?

Storm spotters. As in, the National Weather Service will "activate" their spotters (i.e. tell them to go out and look for twisters, heavy storms, etc.).
