When Is Lundy Burned?

Lundy is reviled in Ulster loyalism as a traitor to this day, and is burned in effigy during the celebrations to mark the anniversary of the shutting of the gates of Derry in 1688.

What is Lundy Day?

The annual event commemorates the 17th century siege of the city and is organised the Apprentice Boys of Derry. In keeping with tradition, the ceremony ended with the burning of an effigy of Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Lundy - the man known as Lundy the Traitor.

Who closed the gates of Derry?

The siege of Derry began in December 1688 when 13 apprentice boys shut the gates of the city against a regiment of twelve hundred Jacobite soldiers, commanded by the Roman Catholic, Alexander Macdonnell, Earl of Antrim, which was immediately withdrawn.
