Pompano rigs (aka set rigs) are most often used near beaches and channels. The rigs have a bright bead and a vibrant yellow float. This helps draw the Pompano to your bait and float your bait off the bottom. The colored beads are said to attract Pompano as they imitate sand flea eggs.
What can you catch on a pompano rig?
They come in clam, shrimp and sand flea flavors. Any of those 3 flavors will catch pompano. Whether you are using sand fleas, clam strips, small pieces of shrimp or small pieces of Fish Bites, you will simply put that on your hooks of the pompano rig and cast it out into the surf.
How long should a pompano rig be?
Pompano are running the South Florida coast this month. Best make rigs before you hit the beach, and bring extras. When I'm tying my dropper rigs, I use a “rig board.” This accessory, which is easy to build, turns out uniform loops every time, and I can better control the length of each finished rig (32 to 34 inches).
