When Tuberculin Skin Test?

When Tuberculin Skin Test?

Doctors should read skin tests 48-72 hours after the injection. The basis of the reading of the skin test is the presence or absence and the amount of induration (localized swelling). A negative test does not always mean that a person is free of tuberculosis.

When should a tuberculin skin test be read?

The skin test reaction should be read between 48 and 72 hours after administration by a health care worker trained to read TST results. A patient who does not return within 72 hours will need to be rescheduled for another skin test. The reaction should be measured in millimeters of the induration (firm swelling).

How long before TB test shows positive?

In a person who is newly infected, the skin test usually becomes positive within 4 to 10 weeks after exposure to the person who is ill with TB. (See "Approach to diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection (tuberculosis screening) in adults".)
