Ipecac contains emetine, which can irritate the respiratory tract. When given by IV: Ipecac is LIKELY UNSAFE when injected at a dose of more than 1 gram. Misuse of ipecac can lead to serious poisoning and death. Signs of poisoning include digestive tract and brain and nerve problems, blood in the urine, and death.
Is ipecac syrup dangerous?
When too much ipecac is used, it can cause damage to the heart and other muscles, and may even cause death. Do not give this medicine to unconscious or very drowsy persons, since the vomited material may enter the lungs and cause pneumonia.
Why is ipecac not used anymore?
