Paramagnetism diminishes the resolution of an NMR spectrum to the extent that coupling is rarely resolved. Nonetheless spectra of paramagnetic compounds provide insight into the bonding and structure of the sample.
How is NMR affected by resonance?
The magnitude or intensity of nmr resonance signals is displayed along the vertical axis of a spectrum, and is proportional to the molar concentration of the sample. Thus, a small or dilute sample will give a weak signal, and doubling or tripling the sample concentration increases the signal strength proportionally.
What affects NMR signal intensity?
We now begin to introduce the factors that contribute to signal intensity. The relative signal strength from the various chemical elements in tissue is determined by three factors: (1) tissue concentration of the element; (2) isotopic abundance; and (3) sensitivity of the specific nuclide.
