Duckweeds grow at water temperatures between 6 and 33°C. Many species of duckweed cope with low temperatures by forming a turion and the plant sinks to the bottom of a lagoon where it remains dormant until warmer water brings about a resumption of normal growth.
What causes duckweed to grow?
Agricultural runoff, availability of fertilizers, visiting animals and birds, leaking tanks and other similar conditions will promote the growth of duckweed population.
How fast does duckweed grow?
Duckweeds can double their mass in between 16 hours to 2 days under optimal nutrient availability, sunlight, and water temperature. This is faster than almost any other higher plant.
