First identified in California in 1962, enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) is one of more than 100 non-polio enteroviruses.
Who discovered enteroviruses?
Albert Sabin was one of the main contributors. He isolated several enterovirus types and established them as causative agents of human disease. The enteroviruses were discovered only after new methods were introduced for working with viruses.
How long has enterovirus been around?
Enterovirus-D68 (EV-D68) was first identified in California in 1962 from children suffering severe respiratory tract infections and pneumonia. The virus is in the Picornaviridae family. Like other picornaviruses, EV-68 virions are small at around 18–30 nm, made up of four structural proteins and are nonenveloped.
