One author recommends a test dose of 12.5 to 25 g IV infusion as mannitol 20% to 25% over 3 to 5 minutes. The balance of 50 g IV infusion of 20% mannitol can be administered over 1 hour. Then, 5% continuous IV infusion at a rate sufficient to maintain urine output at 150 to 500 mL/hour.
Does mannitol need to be filtered?
When exposed to low temperatures, solutions of mannitol may crystallize. If crystals are observed, the container should be warmed to redissolve, then cooled to body temperature before administering (see NOTE under HOW SUPPLIED). When infusing 25% mannitol, the administration set should include a filter.
How do you give ICP mannitol?
Mannitol is typically administered over 20 to 60 minutes; however, faster administration can be used in acute ICP management. When concentrations >20% are administered, use of 0.22 micron in-line filter is required.
