The trade union movement consists of the collective organisation of working people developed to represent and campaign for better working conditions and treatment from their employers and, by the implementation of labour and employment laws, from their governments. During the 1830s labour unrest and trade union activity reached new levels. For the first time men began to organise trade associations with nationwide aims, such as Robert Owen's short-lived Grand National Consolidated Trades Union, formed in February 1834.

In 1891, the first factory act- The Indian factory Act was passed but it remained ineffective. The Second Factory Commission was formed in 1884 to which a memorandum signed by Narayan Meghji Lokhande along with 5300 workers was submitted. Thus Lokhande emerged as the first trade union leader of India.
