A coronary computed tomography angiogram (CTA) uses advanced CT technology, along with intravenous (IV) contrast material (dye), to obtain high-resolution, 3D pictures of the moving heart and great vessels. CTA is also called multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT), cardiac CT or cardiac CAT.
Is an angiogram the same as a CTA?
A CT angiogram is a less invasive test than a standard angiogram. A standard angiogram involves threading a thin tube called a catheter through an artery in your arm or leg up to the area being studied. But with a CT angiogram, no tubes are put in your body.
Is there an alternative to an angiogram?
CCTA is not invasive. An alternative test, cardiac catheterization with a coronary angiogram, is invasive, has more complications related to the placement of a long catheter into the groin or wrist arteries extending all the way to the heart, and the movement of the catheter in the blood vessels.
