When Do Creek Chubs Spawn?

Creek chubs spawn from early May in southern Minnesota into July in the north when water temperatures are 13-18° C (55-65° F). In streams, creek chubs excavate (dig out) a pit in gravel beds where there is a moderate current.

How often do creek chubs spawn?

Creek chubs breed once a year. Mating occurs for about two weeks, from mid-spring to early summer, in waters with temperatures above 14° C.

How long does take Creek Chub to grow?

Major growth occurs during the first year, often jumping by over 50–70 mm in one year. Males grow far more quickly than females, allowing maturity to occur at one to one and a half years of age. The main scales covering the creek chub are bony-ridge scales; they are thin and flexible to aid movement.
