Muslims fast because it is a religious duty. It is commanded in the Qur'an that all Muslims fast and they are able to follow in the footsteps of the Prophet Muhammad. In terms of religious practice it gives Muslims an opportunity to reflect in a spiritual way about their lives and develop a sense of self-discipline.
What is SAWM and why is it important?
Ṣawm, (Arabic: “fasting”) in Islam, any religious fast, but especially the fast of the month of Ramadan during which Muslims abstain from food or drink each day from sunrise (fajr) until sunset (maghrib). The purpose of the fast is to practice self-restraint, piety, and generosity.
What are the benefits of SAWM?
There are many good reasons for this fast, including:

- Learning self-discipline.
- Becoming spiritually stronger.
- Appreciating God's gifts to us.
- Sharing the sufferings of the poor and developing sympathy for them.
