Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is well-known for treating depression, among other mental health conditions. One goal of CBT is to help you “rewire” your thoughts. Many people with depression experience distorted ways of thinking, which may be even more ingrained if you have persistent depression.
What therapy is best for dysthymia?
The most common drug treatments are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors like fluoxetine (Prozac) and sertraline (Zoloft), or one of the dual action antidepressants such as venlafaxine (Effexor). Some patients may do better with a tricyclic antidepressant like imipramine (Tofranil).
Is it possible to recover from dysthymia?
Spontaneous remission of dysthymia is unlikely, and the best way to avoid significant problems down the road is to seek treatment for depression whenever symptoms occur, regardless of their strength and intensity.
