Biting midges live in many coastal and inland areas of Western Australia. They are most commonly found in tropical and sub-tropical parts of the State near sandy estuarine and foreshore areas and mangrove swamps. They are very common in some coastal areas of north-west WA.

Where are biting midges found?

Species belonging to the genus Leptoconops occur in the tropics, sub-tropics, the Caribbean, and some coastal areas of southeast Florida. The natural habitats of biting midges vary by species. Areas with substantial salt marsh habitat are major producers of many biting midge species.

Where do midge flies live?

As larvae, most midges live at the bottoms of ponds, lakes, and other aquatic habitats. Some species live in other types of moist places (damp soil, rotting plant material, and so on). Most are scavengers and spend 1 to 3 years as larvae. The pupae are aquatic, breathe air, and are a lot like the pupae of mosquitoes.
