Mark down the first day of your period. You will also want to make a mark on each day until your period stops. In addition to charting your period bleeding be sure to note each day you experience any vaginal bleeding, even if it's a day when you spot or bleed between periods.

Day 1 of your cycle is the first day of your period, meaning the first day of full flow (spotting doesn't count). During this time, the uterus sheds its lining from the previous cycle.

To figure out the “length” of your cycle, begin counting on the first day of bleeding (which is also called “cycle day 1), until the first day of your next period. The average menstrual cycle is about 28 days, but it can vary quite a bit.
