Chukars are ground-dwelling birds that would rather walk or run than fly. They run up rocky slopes with ease and hop from rock to rock, easily outpacing a human.

At what age can Chukars fly?

Housing. Chukar Partridge are primarily ground-dwelling birds but they are able to fly. If frightened, they prefer to run instead of taking flight. The young Chukar can begin to fly as young as 12 days of age, so be prepared to cover the brooding area with top netting as they grow.

Where does the chukar bird live?

Native to the Middle East and southern Asia, the Chukar was brought as a game bird to North America, where it has thrived in some arid regions of the west. From late summer to early spring, Chukars travel in coveys, but they may be hard to see as they range through the brush of steep desert canyons.
