Senior Member. I know it sounds peculiar, but "aren't I" is a correct and natural tag-question in spoken English! The expression "am I not" is also acceptable, but quite formal and probably used more in written than in spoken English.
Which is correct AMN T I or aren't I?
Answer. “Aren't I?” is commonly used and very acceptable in informal language. “Am I not?” is grammatical, but extremely formal, so in most contexts, “aren't I?” is the preferred choice.
Can you say Amn t I?
“Am I not?” or “Am not I” are the acceptable interrogative forms, which gives “amn't I?” as the logical abbreviation. But somehow this is not the norm in English. On the contrary, in the vast anglophone world, we are almost alone in using it.
