Bretons are Celts who live in north-west France. The present administrative region of Brittany contains only four of the five historic provinces (départements). The province of Atlantique Maritime and the city Nantes, formerly a capital of Brittany, is now part of the region of Pays de la Loire.
When did the Bretons leave Britain?
The Bretons arrived in their current homeland in the fifth and sixth centuries ad, fleeing the Anglo-Saxons in their native Britain. Brittany was independently governed until 1532, when it was formally annexed to France. The region suffered great setbacks during both World War I (1914–18) and World War II (1939–45).
