The sagittal plane in anatomy refers to an imaginary divider that splits the body, or a body part, vertically. The sagittal plane is parallel to the median plane, which separates the whole of the body vertically into two equal parts.
Is a sagittal plane equal?
Sagittal Plane The sagittal plane divides the body vertically into equal right and left halves. This plane is also referred to as the midsagittal plane because it is on the midline of the body. Movements within the sagittal plane are flexion and extension – forward and backward movements of the head, spine, and limbs.
Does sagittal mean vertical?
Sagittal: A vertical plane passing through the standing body from front to back. The mid-sagital, or median, plane splits the body into left and right halves. For a more complete listing of terms used in medicine for spatial orientation, please see the entry to "Anatomic Orientation Terms".
