Acute exposure to lithium can cause leukocytosis, whereas chronic exposure can produce aplastic anemia. Patients who are on long-term lithium therapy can develop localized edema, dermatitis, and skin ulcers.
Can lithium cause blood clots?
Although thrombosis can occur with normal lithium concentrations, it may be more prevalent in patients with lithium toxicity.
What hematologic changes occur with lithium?
Many studies of lithium-treated patients suggest that ingestion of this drug causes a diversity of haematological changes1–3. The most consistent changes documented in the literature have been associated with an elevation of the white blood cell count.
