The doctor may need to stimulate the cervix to dilate it, as membrane stripping will not be possible otherwise. The procedure can be uncomfortable, and most women feel a bit of pain and tenderness afterward. Some women also experience minor bleeding.
What does membrane stripping feel like?
Getting a membrane sweep feels kind of like a rough cervical check. During my first sweep, with my second baby, my whole body involuntarily recoiled. It's a lot of pressure in a highly sensitive place. But although it was super uncomfortable for 10 seconds or so, I wouldn't say it was particularly painful.
How long after stripping the membranes does labor start?
After having a membrane sweep
After your membrane sweep you should wear a sanitary pad and can go home and wait for your labour to start. Most women will go into labour within 48 hours. If you do not go into labour within 48 hours your community midwife will give you an appointment to come for an induction.
