Pyonephrosis is a surgical emergency and needs immediate intervention. Pyonephrosis may be treated with either an antegrade or a retrograde decompression. Retrograde decompression, or placement of a ureteral stent, is indicated in stable patients with no signs of hemodynamic instability.
