They lay 10 to 15 pinkish-white eggs. Females may lay several clutches in one breeding season. Eggs hatch in 60 to 100 days. Like most turtle species, temperature determines the gender of the hatchlings: the warmer the nest, the more female terrapins develop.
What time of year do terrapins lay eggs?
Like other turtles, sea turtles lay eggs. Females come ashore on a sandy beach to nest a few weeks after mating. Females usually nest during the warmest months of the year. The exception is the leatherback turtle, which nests in fall and winter.
Do terrapin turtles lay eggs?
❖ Terrapins produce only about 25-40 eggs per year (and may not nest every year) and do not reach maturity until a minimum of 6 years of age. The low reproductive potential of terrapins means that females must reproduce for many years in order for the population to grow or remain stable.
