UK drill is a regional subgenre of drill music and road rap that originated in the South London district of Brixton from 2012 onwards. Borrowing heavily from the style of Chicago drill music, UK drill artists often rap about violent and hedonistic criminal lifestyles.
Is UK drill and grime the same?
UK drill has developed a different production style than Chicago drill taking influence from earlier British genres such as grime and UK garage. Drill producer Mazza noted that both drill and grime share a similar rawness and energy, yet the two genres remain distinct from each-other.
Why is drill called Drill?
A teenage rapper, leading a burgeoning scene categorized as drill music—taken from the slang usage of “drill,” meaning to shoot someone—who was telling firsthand stories of the violent, gang-dominated Chicago culture that reflected a city with an ongoing history of segregation and neglect of the black community.
