The best time to cut phragmites is at the end of July. Cutting at other times may increase stand density. Phragmites stems should be cut below the lowest leaf, leaving a 6" or shorter stump.
Can you cut down Phragmites?
Hand cutting can remove individual plant stems or very small stands of phragmites; however, a brush cutter is more effective for large, dense stands. The cutting blade should be set to a mowing height greater than four inches to help minimize impacts to small animals and native plants.
Does mowing kill Phragmites?
To control Phragmites, mowing or burning is generally unsuccessful, unless the work is repeated for multiple years.
