Avoid antiseptic agents such as alcohol, Merthiolate, iodine, mercurochrome, or hydrogen peroxide. They do little good and cause stinging. Next, apply direct pressure to the scrape, using non-stick gauze or a clean cloth to hold on the scrape and stop the flow of blood.
Can mercurochrome be used on open wounds?
Applying alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, mercurochrome or iodine onto a wound can delay healing and should be avoided. Consider putting a bandage, such as an adhesive strip, on the cut or graze, especially on the hands, legs and feet. Always put an adhesive strip across a cut, and not lengthwise.
Does mercurochrome heal a wound?
Decrease in the exudates on the raw surface of the wound along with the strong antiseptic action of mercurochrome causes resistance to infection. This leads to prompt healing of the wound without much scarring. In case of deep burns, mercurochrome causes development of healthy granulation tissue beneath the eschar.
