Where Does Marble Come from?

Marble can be found all over the world, but the four countries where it is most prevalent are Italy, Spain, India, and China. The most prestigious famous white marble comes from Carrara, Italy. This marble was used by Michelangelo, Canova, and Donatello for their infamous sculptures.

How marble is formed?

Marble is a metamorphic rock formed when limestone is exposed to high temperatures and pressures. Marble forms under such conditions because the calcite forming the limestone recrystallises forming a denser rock consisting of roughly equigranular calcite crystals.

Where did marble originally come from?

Marble can be found in many areas around the world, from Macedonia to Vermont, but the most famous varieties come from Italy and Greece, where it is often purest in color. Purity, of course, refers to the lack of color variation within a specific sample of stone.
