Main, or propulsion, engines are used to turn the ship's propeller and move the ship through the water. They typically burn diesel oil or heavy fuel oil, and may be able to switch between the two. There are many propulsion arrangements for motor vessels, some including multiple engines, propellers, and gearboxes.
Which engine is used in ship?
Today, most ships use diesel engines, except for small boats that are driven by gasoline engines. The typical structure of diesel engine is shown in Fig. 1.2.
How does a ship engine work?

- Suction stroke for taking the fresh air inside the chamber – which is the downward movement of the piston.
- Compression stroke to compress the air-fuel mixture – which is an upward movement of the piston.
- Power stroke – in which the explosion takes place and the piston is pushed downwards.
