At the Office for National Statistics (ONS), we are responsible for planning and running the census in England and Wales. National Records of Scotland and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency run their own censuses and their websites have information on how you can take part.
Who has to fill out the census UK?
The Census Act 1920 makes it compulsory for everyone in England and Wales to take part in the census. It also sets the maximum fine for not completing the census. Any census questions on religion, sexual orientation and gender identity are voluntary but completing the census is compulsory.
Does everyone fill out a census?
Every householder must either answer the questions for everyone living there, or make sure each person answers their own. This year, people are being asked to fill the census out online using an access code sent in the post.
