A: There is no test to see if you have cyclothymic disorder. If you think you might have the condition, your doctor will talk to you about your mood history and make an assessment.
How do you rule out cyclothymia?
Cyclothymia is characterized by changing low-level depression along with periods of hypomania. The symptoms must be present for at least two years in adults or one year in children before a diagnosis can be made. Adults have symptom-free periods that last no longer than two months.
How does cyclothymia feel?
If you have cyclothymia, you'll have periods of feeling low followed by periods of extreme happiness and excitement (called hypomania) when you do not need much sleep and feel that you have a lot of energy. The periods of low mood do not last long enough and are not severe enough to be diagnosed as clinical depression.
