Preparation of Iodic Acid
Production of acid with oxidizing iodine I2 with strong oxidizers like aqua fortis HNO3, chlorine Cl2, chloric acid HClO3 or peroxide H2O2. Reactions are as follows: I2 + 6 H2O + 5 Cl2 ⇌ 2 HIO3 + 10 HCl. 3I2 + 10 HNO3 ⇌ 6 HIO3 + 10 NO + 2 H2O.
What is iodic acid made of?
It is also an acid. Its chemical formula is HIO3. It contains hydrogen and iodate ions. The iodine is in its +5 oxidation state.
How will you prepare iodic acid from i2?
Iodine is quantitatively oxidised to iodic acid by boiling with 70% perchloric acid and the iodic acid is isolated by cooling, filtering off the precipitated crystals, and washing them with concentrated nitric acid. The over-all stoichiometry of the reaction is one molecule of perchloric acid per atom of iodine.
