Can Pessaries Cause Bleeding?

There is a risk of erosion (wear and tear) to the vaginal skin, this can cause bleeding and/or discharge. If you have any abnormal bleeding do not ignore this. Seek medical advice. Some women find that after the pessary has been inserted that they can leak urine.

Can a pessary make you bleed?

Occasionally you might have a little spotting of blood following insertion of the pessary which should settle quickly. This may give you abnormal bleeding or discharge. If you have bleeding you should see your doctor.

Why does a pessary cause bleeding?

Pain or discomfort means the pessary is not fitting correctly and should be replaced with a different size. A pink or bloody discharge could mean the pessary is rubbing against the wall of the vagina. In most cases, removal will allow the area to heal. In cases of bleeding, a visit to a nurse or doctor is needed.
