Alpacas traditionally reach breeding maturation sometime between twelve and twenty-four months, with some as late as thirty. While some alpacas have successfully conceived as young as five months, this is not safe for the female or the baby.
Do alpacas have a breeding season?
For one thing, llamas and alpacas are receptive and fertile all year around: there is no rut, estrus, or true breeding season like in some other livestock. Mature females have a follicular cycle that produces ripe eggs on a regular basis, and this cycle is generally only interrupted by pregnancy.
What season do alpacas breed?
Mating. When: Oct – Dec, April – June. Why: Gestation is 11–12 months so we don't want crias born in the heat of summer or the cold of winter (also not as many daylight hours in winter).
