A sconce is a type of light fixture that is fixed to a wall. The light is usually, but not always, directed upwards and outwards, rather than down. The sconce is a very old form of fixture, historically used with candles and oil lamps.
Why is the sconce called a sconce?
The first known use of the word “Sconce” was during the 15th century. Of note, the Dutch word “Schans” was taken from the German word “Schanze”. The word “Sconce” is taken from Middle English, or Old French “Esconse” which referred to “Screened candle or lantern” and from “Escunser” (to hide/obscure).
Where does the word sconce originate from?
sconce (n.)
late 14c., "candlestick with a screen," a shortening of Old French esconse "lantern, hiding place," from Medieval Latin sconsa, from Latin absconsa, fem. past participle of abscondere "to hide" (see abscond).
