The Dharmashastras are based on ancient Dharmasūtra texts, which themselves emerged from the literary tradition of the Vedas (Rig, Yajur, Sāma, and Atharva) composed in 2nd millennium BCE to the early centuries of the 1st millennium BCE.
Who wrote Dharmasutra?
As many as three witnesses are required. False evidence must face sanctions. The Dharmasutra is attributed to Gautama, a Brahmin family name, many of whose members founded the various Shakhas (Vedic schools) of Samaveda.
Why was Dharmasutra written?
Dharmashastras and Dharmasutras were the religious texts written in Sanskrit by the Brahmins. These texts laid down the codes of social behaviour in great detail. These were meant to be followed by Brahmanas in particular and the rest of society in general.
