An upstand is a vertical lip that runs from the edge of a shower tray up the wall about 20-30mm. It provides a seamless transition between the shower enclosure and the tile designed to prevent water from getting behind the tile and the shower tray.
Why do shower trays have Upstands?
During installation, this provides a watertight finish between the tray and the finished wall surface. Some trays come with four upstands so that a framed door sits within the top of the tray to prevent any leaks.
What is a bathroom upstand?
Upstands enable a water tight seal between the bath and wall lining or tiles allowing the installer to apply the sealant above the baths surface, preventing a visible seal that can discolour or mould.
