What are boranes and examples?
Boranes are compounds consisting of boron and hydrogen. ... The most basic example is diborane (B2H6), all boranes are electron-deficient compounds. For B2H6 usually 14 electrons are needed to form 2c,2e-bonds, but only 12 valence electrons are present.
Why are the boranes so called?
The boron hydrides were first systematically synthesized and characterized during the period 1912 to roughly 1937 by the German chemist Alfred Stock. He called them boranes in analogy to the alkanes (saturated hydrocarbons), the hydrides of carbon (C), which is the neighbour of boron in the periodic table.
